Oil choppy with Brent trading near four-year low

Crude-oil futures were choppy in Asian trade Tuesday after sharp overnight losses as markets continue to look for cues that could drive prices higher.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for delivery in December CLZ4, -0.68%  traded at $77.19 a barrel, down $0.27 in the Globex electronic session. December Brent crude LCOZ4, -0.61%  on London’s ICE Futures exchange fell $0.28 to $82.06 a barrel.

Gold settles higher, moving off year’s low

Gold settled fractionally higher Tuesday near lows of the year after struggling to shake off early-session losses with the government, bond market and the banks closed down for Veterans Day.

Gold for December delivery GCZ4, +0.07%  settled up $3.20, or 0.3%, at $1,163 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold worked its way out of an early loss in fits and starts, seeing a low of $1,145.50 an ounce and a high of $1,165.90.

On Thursday, gold settled at its lowest point on the year at $1,142.60 an ounce.

Asian Market Update

Asian markets were mixed Wednesday as Tokyo extended a rally after the dollar broke 116 yen for the first time in seven years, while speculation swirls that Japan may put off another unpopular sales tax hike.

Wall Street provided support for buyers again after the Dow and S&P 500 squeezed out another record for a fifth straight session, while investors await the release this week of Chinese indicators and a G20 summit at the weekend.

MALAYSIA share prices opened lower on Wednesday with the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Composite Index down 5.28 points to 1818.89.

Volume was 45.46 million lots worth RM22.16 million.

Losers outnumbered gainers 87 to 73.
