December natural-gas futures NGZ14, +1.05%  rose $3.90 cents, or 1%, to $3.8270 per million British thermal units.

Earlier Thursday, the Energy Information Administration reported natural gas supplies rose by 87 billion cubic feet in the week ended Oct. 24, slightly more than analysts had expected.

Gasoline Market Update


Nymex gasoline for November RBX4, -0.97%  lost $2.49 cents, or 1.1%, to settle at $2.1958 a gallon.

November heating oil RBX4, -0.97%  fell $2.22 cents, or 0.9%, to finish at $3.5128 a gallon on Nymex.

Dollar surges to nearly seven-year high against yen

The U.S. dollar hit its highest level against the yen in nearly seven years on Friday, after the Bank of Japan unexpectedly announced new measures to spur Japanese growth.

The dollar USDJPY, +2.84%  soared 2.7% to ¥112.33 from ¥109.22 late Thursday. It climbed 3.9% this week and 2.7% this month.

The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +1.16% a measure of the dollar against a basket of major currencies, was up 1.2% at 78.80. The ICE Dollar Index DXY, +0.87%  rose to 86.907 from 86.142.

The euro EURUSD, -0.73%  fell to $1.2526 from $1.2611 late Thursday. The British pound GBPUSD, -0.04%  was down slightly on the day at $1.5999.

Oil falls, snapping two-day winning streak

Crude-oil futures declined Thursday, marking its first down move after two straight sessions of gains.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures CLZ4, -0.52%  for delivery in December fell $1.08, or 1.3%, to settle at $81.12 a barrel.

December Brent crude LCOZ4, -0.32%  on London’s ICE Futures exchange fell 88 cents, or 1%, to end at $86.24 a barrel.

Gold sinks to levels not seen since 2010 as BOJ rallies dollar

Gold took a hard fall on Friday, at one point trading at levels not seen since 2010, as the dollar surged in the wake of a surprise stimulus move from the Bank of Japan.

Gold for December delivery GCZ4, -2.09%  slumped $27, or 2.3%, to settle at $1,171.60 an ounce, closing out the week 5.3% lower. The precious metal shed 3.7% in October and is down 3.3% for the year to date. December silver SIZ4, -1.52%  gave up 31 cents to $16.11 an ounce.
